Kingsley Plantation

Kingsley Plantation

2.18.17

The Kingsley Plantation was on our way from Orlando to Savannah,
so of course we had to stop and explore.

This is the owner's house that was probably built around 1797.
Zephaniah Kingsley was a paradox of a man.
He bought Anna as a slave and married her when she was 13 years old.
He freed her when she was 18 and charged her with running the plantation,
including oversight of the slaves.
Zephaniah defended slavery and was proud of his multiracial family.

More about the plantation and the family here:

There was a presentation of African drumming and dancing while we were there.

Although Jadan and Jen were ready to head back to the car and rest after a short time,
the rest of the family looked around some more and got a chance to meet this little guy...

On the plantation property are the remains of several slave cabins,
making this an historically and archeologically significant site.

This is what the slave cabins are made of...durable cement tabby.
Reminded us of the coquina at St. Augustine, but the shells are big.
